‘I Need 2 Pizzas’: A 911 Call That Saved a Mother and Her Stepdaughter

Posted on July 25, 2026

Jane fell into an abusive relationship with her husband after he lost his job. When she realised that both her life and her stepdaughter’s life were in danger, she gathered the courage to make a desperate call that would change everything.

Denise worked as a 911 call operator. Her father had been a police officer, and she had always dreamed of serving and protecting her community. Although she wanted to join the police force, she could never complete the academy’s physical training after losing both of her legs in a car accident.

Believing her dream was over, Denise eventually accepted her father’s suggestion to join the 911 response team. She quickly discovered that helping people in emergencies was exactly where she belonged.

Her job was demanding and emotionally exhausting. She handled traumatic situations every day, but she loved knowing she could make a difference.

One day, Denise received an unusual call. At first, she assumed it was another prank.

“Hi, my name is Jane. C-could I please get two pizzas as soon as possible? Please, I’m desperate,” Jane whispered.

“Sorry, ma’am, I think you have the wrong number,” Denise replied.

“No! Please don’t hang up!” Jane pleaded.

Denise paused. There was genuine fear in Jane’s voice.

“Alright, I’m going to ask you a few questions. Answer only yes or no. Understood?”

“Yes.”

“Are you in danger?”

“Yes.”

“Is anyone else in the room?”

“Yes. My daughter and I are starving.”

Denise immediately realised Jane was speaking in code.

“Is this a domestic situation?”

“Yes.”

“Is it a man?”

“Yes.”

“Is he armed? Is he alone?”

“Yes… and yes.”

As Denise quietly traced the call and alerted police, Jane suddenly became nervous.

“Who are you talking to? Hang up!” a man shouted in the background.

“I was just ordering pizza for—”

A loud knock interrupted her, and the call went dead.

Thankfully, Denise had already located the address and dispatched officers.

Police arrived within minutes and forced their way inside. They found Jane’s husband drunk, while Jane and her stepdaughter, Matilda, were hiding in another room, terrified. The house was littered with empty beer bottles and pizza boxes.

The officers arrested Jane’s husband immediately and took Jane and Matilda to safety.

Although Denise tried not to become emotionally involved in the cases she handled, this one stayed with her. She wanted to know if Jane and Matilda were safe.

Later, Jane asked to meet Denise so she could thank her in person. They met for lunch, where Jane brought Matilda along.

Jane explained that her husband had not always been abusive. After losing his job, he began drinking heavily, and his behaviour changed completely. The abuse gradually worsened until he became controlling and violent.

A week before the emergency call, he became furious after seeing Jane speak with a man at a grocery store. He locked Jane and Matilda inside the house and refused to let them leave.

By then, Jane loved Matilda as her own daughter and knew she had to find a way to protect them both.

Jane’s husband was later arrested, and the court terminated his parental rights. Jane was granted sole custody of Matilda.

Together, Jane and Matilda attended therapy, and with time—and the support of their new friend, Denise—they slowly rebuilt their lives.

What We Can Learn

  • Sometimes the hardest decision is the one that saves your life and the lives of those you love.
  • Listening carefully can make all the difference. If Denise had dismissed the call as a prank, the outcome could have been tragic. Instead, she recognised Jane’s hidden plea for help and acted quickly, saving two lives.
