A Catholic priest in Ecuador was celebrating Mass when a horrifying accident occurred before his congregation.
The entire service was being livestreamed, capturing the shocking moment when everything suddenly took a tragic turn.
What followed sent worshippers rushing forward to help him.
Heavy crucifix suddenly broke loose
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez was conducting an evening Mass at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on October 17 when a massive crucifix mounted on the wall above him suddenly came loose.
The service was being broadcast live, and the devastating incident was recorded on camera.

Sánchez was standing in front of the congregation, delivering his message, when the enormous cross suddenly fell and struck him.
Congregation members immediately hurried to his side and contacted emergency services. Tragically, Father Sánchez succumbed to his injuries.
Last words
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil later confirmed his passing, explaining that the priest had served as the parish priest of Perpetuo Socorro Church. He was also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
However, it was the message Sánchez had shared just moments before the accident that deeply affected those who heard it.
He had been speaking about how fleeting life can be, reminding everyone present that death is something every person will eventually face.

“One day, all of us here will also die,” he said.
He then urged the congregation to consider how they use the precious time they have been given—with God, their spouses, their children, their families, and the people who surround them.
“The quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children, and family – that time is the best spent.”
Shortly afterward, he asked God to bless everyone gathered in the church.
What caused the fall?
As of Monday, the reason the crucifix detached from the wall and fell remained unknown. Church authorities had not released any official explanation regarding the incident.
For those who witnessed the heartbreaking event, the timing of Sánchez’s words has made his death even more difficult to comprehend. Nevertheless, members of the community have encouraged others not to view the tragedy as a punishment or pretend to know the reason behind it.
