Under-Sink Storage Hazards

Posted on October 15, 2026

Avoid keeping cleaning products, paper goods, small appliances, food, pet food, plastic bags, or recyclable materials beneath your kitchen sink, as this concealed area can cause more problems than it prevents. Moisture, plumbing leaks, and inadequate airflow can encourage mold growth, rust, unpleasant smells, and pest infestations. There may also be safety risks if chemicals deteriorate or come into contact with other substances in damp conditions. Over time, excess moisture and poor ventilation can damage stored items and turn an otherwise useful cabinet into a potential health and safety concern.

Instead, store these belongings in a dry pantry, cupboard, or utility closet where consistent, dry conditions help protect the items and everyone who uses them. Keeping cleaning products away from damp areas and potential leaks lowers the risk of product damage and hazardous reactions. Likewise, placing paper supplies, food, and pet food in a dry location helps prevent spoilage and unwanted pests. Moving plastic bags and recyclables elsewhere also keeps them cleaner and reduces the chance of unpleasant odors. By recognizing the cabinet beneath your sink as an unsuitable place for general storage, rather than using it as a catch-all space, you can reduce the risk of mold, rust, foul smells, pest problems, and chemical hazards in your kitchen.
