Influencer couple announce pregnancy after sharing truth about their intimacy

Posted on September 12, 2026

Shane lives with a severe muscle-wasting condition and uses a wheelchair, while Hannah is fully able-bodied. Now, the couple have shared some incredible news: they are expecting their first child, after previously opening up about the truth about their intimacy.

Hannah Burcaw was a freshman at Carleton College in 2016 when she watched a documentary about Shane, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic condition that affects nerve cells and severely limits mobility.

But rather than focusing on his challenges, Hannah was struck by Shane’s humor and his ability to embrace life despite his condition.

So, she decided to take a chance and sent him a cold email. It wasn’t long before the two started dating. After years of navigating a long-distance relationship before eventually being together in person, Hannah and Shane took the next big step and got married in 2020.

In recent years, the couple has grown their YouTube channel, Squirmy and Grubs, a lot. Hannah and Shane mostly share what their life is like being in an interabled relationship.

The pair also has a weekly podcast, Junkyard Mayhem, and previously revealed that many people found their relationship “peculiar.”

Hannah and Shane Burcaw Share the Truth About Their Intimacy

In January 2025, they released their first book, Interabled: True Stories About Love and Disability, from Squirmy & Grubs and Other Interabled Couples.

Many followers have wondered about more intimate details of their relationship, and some assumed that Hannah had signed up for a life of both being childless as well as celibate. However, that’s far from the truth.

“It’s far from true. We have a satisfying intimate life, and both of us are interested in having children together down the road,” Hannah and Shane said.

“Disabled people can have s**,” Shane once shared.

When they launched their YouTube channel, Shane revealed that they couldn’t imagine how much people would question their love for each other.

“We’re seen as asexual beings,” Shane said.

Hannah asked whether it was another misconception that his “physical organs” don’t work, which perhaps was behind people’s imagination that something wasn’t right between them.

“Well, that,” Shane continued, “and they see my attraction, my ability to attract a partner as non-existent.”

Hannah added, “And even if you did, it wouldn’t work. There’s no physical way — because we get a lot of like, ‘There’s no physical way that they could, so they’re lying.’”

Hannah and Shane Announce Their Pregnancy

Now, Hannah and Shane have shared some rather incredible news. On Wednesday, the couple announced that Hannah is pregnant.

“We are beyond ecstatic to announce that we’re expecting our first child this coming January!” they wrote on Instagram.

“Hannah is 20 weeks pregnant, and although we’ve been thoroughly enjoying this special time in privacy so far, we’ve also missed sharing all the joy with you, and there’s SO MUCH to share!”

Moreover, Hannah and Shane wanted to show compassion for anyone who might be struggling emotionally after seeing their pregnancy announcement.

“After going through IVF unsuccessfully for many years, we understand all too well the difficulties that many people experience when trying to conceive, and how seeing announcements can feel,” they continued. “Our hearts go out to you.”

We are so happy for Hannah and Shane. Congratulations and good luck!
