I Went Hiking in the Forest With My Son

Posted on August 9, 2026

I crouched down, heart pounding, trying to steady my breathing while my son hovered behind me. Up close, it was even more disturbing: rubbery red “fingers” splayed open like a hand reaching from the earth, slick and wet, dusted with dark slime. Flies circled it eagerly, landing and taking off, drawn to the sickly, sweet stench of rot.

That smell finally triggered a memory from an article I’d once skimmed about bizarre fungi. I pulled out my phone, hands still shaking, and searched. There it was: Clathrus archeri—better known as “devil’s fingers.”

Relief washed over me, almost making me laugh. Not a creature, not a corpse, just a rare mushroom doing exactly what it was meant to do: imitate decay, lure insects, and spread life in the strangest possible way.

My son relaxed, still wary but fascinated, as we realized the forest wasn’t threatening us—it was simply showing us how weird and wild nature can be.
