Posted on October 5, 2026

A beloved Hollywood actress has passed away. Mary Louise Weller, widely recognized for portraying Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy classic Animal House, has died at the age of 79.

Mary Louise Weller died on October 1 after a brief illness, just one day before she was due to celebrate her 80th birthday. According to reports, news of her passing was shared through her Facebook account, while her family requested privacy and respect during this difficult period.

“With a heavy heart I share that Mary Louise Weller [‘ML to those that knew and loved her] passed away this morning after a brief illness. The family is asking for privacy & respect at this difficult time. Thank you all for your supportive words & continued kindness.”

The cause of Weller’s death has not been disclosed. Born October 2, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, Weller began her screen career with a role in the 1972 comedy Hail.

The following year, she had an uncredited appearance alongside Al Pacino in the crime drama Serpico. More acting opportunities came afterward, particularly on television, where she made guest appearances in shows including Starsky and Hutch, Baretta, and Kojak.

Still, it was her appearance in the 1978 movie Animal House that would ultimately become the defining role of Mary Louise Weller’s career. She portrayed Mandy Pepperidge, the glamorous sorority sister, sharing the screen with stars including John Belushi, Tim Matheson, and a young Kevin Bacon.

The film went on to become one of the best-known comedies of the 1970s, while Weller’s performance introduced her to millions of viewers.

Weller later remembered being told that Animal House might become the film she would always be associated with. In the years that followed, that prediction became reality.

Although Animal House remained Mary Louise Weller’s most recognizable role, her acting career extended well beyond the comedy. She appeared in several other films, including The Bell Jar and Bloodtide. Her final screen credit came in 1983 with an appearance on Quincy, M.E.

Outside of acting, Weller had a deep love for horses and eventually became a skilled equestrian. She eventually left the acting world behind and devoted more of her time to horses and writing.

Weller is survived by her longtime partner, Michael Roy Curtis, as well as her cousin, author Sheila Weller.

Rest in peace, Mary Louise Weller. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones.
