Vatican Confirms Cancer Diagnosis for Pope Leo XIV Following Emergency Surgery

Posted on October 22, 2026

ROME — The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after undergoing emergency surgery to remove part of his right lung.

Medical updates issued by the Holy See revealed that post-operative pathology reports confirmed the presence of lung cancer. During the procedure, surgeons successfully performed a lobectomy, removing the lower lobe of the 71-year-old pontiff’s right lung. Medical personnel noted that while the underlying pulmonary condition was suspected during preoperative evaluations, it was formally verified during surgery.

According to Vatican officials, the three-hour procedure—including approximately 90 minutes of active operating time—was completed successfully without complications.

Schedule Suspended for Recovery

Following the surgery, the Vatican announced an immediate suspension of the Pope’s public schedule. All official papal audiences, diplomatic meetings, and public liturgical appearances have been cancelled through at least October 20 to allow the pontiff to recover under medical supervision.

Church officials stated that Pope Leo XIV is currently alert, resting comfortably, and showing stable vital signs. While the primary goal of the surgery was to contain and remove the malignant tissue at an early stage, medical staff have not yet announced whether follow-up treatments—such as chemotherapy, radiation, or targeted oncology therapies—will be required.

Historic Papacy Faces First Health Crisis

This operation marks the first major medical concern of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy. Elected in May 2025 following the death of Pope Francis, the former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost made history as the first American elected to the Chair of Saint Peter. His papacy has thus far centered on structural Vatican reforms, international diplomacy, and missionary work.

Given the physical demands of leading a global community of 1.4 billion Catholics, health developments regarding the Bishop of Rome remain a focal point for the Holy See. Additional medical bulletins are expected to be released as his recovery progresses.
