Two Point Four Children star Georgina Cates dies suddenly at age 51

Posted on October 19, 2026

Georgina Cates, the British actress celebrated for her roles in An Awfully Big Adventure and 2point4 Children, has passed away at the age of 51.

Her daughter, Naiia, shared the heartbreaking news through an emotional tribute on Instagram.

“My beautiful, free-spirited mom endured a difficult life, yet she still found ways to make herself and the people around her laugh and smile,” Naiia wrote. “Now she can finally rest easy.”

She remembered her mother as much more than an actress, describing her as an exceptionally imaginative woman who never felt the need to conform to other people’s expectations.

“I will always picture you through black-and-white photographs, Virginia Slims, oversized clothes, going without bras, enormous sunglasses, doodling while talking, pleasers, flip-flops, and everything in between,” she wrote.

“I love you. Thank you for your creativity, curiosity, and the courage you always showed in staying true to yourself, no matter what.”

Born Clare Woodgate in Colchester, England, in 1975, Cates developed an interest in acting when she was still young. She once explained that she enjoyed pretending to be different people because she “couldn’t see the point of spending every day just being me.”

That bold imagination would eventually become one of the most distinctive qualities of her acting career.

She initially gained recognition in Britain for portraying Jenny Porter in the BBC sitcom 2point4 Children. However, Cates was eager to explore new opportunities, and one remarkable decision ultimately helped her secure a significant film role.

When she auditioned for An Awfully Big Adventure, Cates hoped to play Stella Bradshaw but was rejected at first.

Determined to try again, she returned using the name Georgina Cates, dramatically changed her appearance, dyed her hair red, and developed a Liverpool accent to create a completely different identity.

This time, she won the role.

Released in 1995, the film also featured Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman and became one of the most notable performances of her career. Critics admired how Cates portrayed Stella with a compelling blend of innocence, resilience, and vulnerability.

She subsequently appeared with Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn in Clay Pigeons. Her other film credits included Illuminata, Frankie Starlight, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, and Everlasting, which marked her final screen appearance.

Hollywood also brought Cates a meaningful romantic relationship.

In 1997, she married actor Skeet Ulrich after the pair met at an Oscars party. They later became parents to twins, Naiia and Jakob, before ending their marriage in 2005.

Beyond her work in front of the camera, Cates eventually discovered another way to express her creativity through photography.

She once spoke about her desire to avoid repeating the same kinds of performances throughout her career.

“I always want to do something different,” she said. “I don’t want to play the same role. I’m just not built that way.”

Perhaps those words offer the most fitting way to remember her.

She was not merely an actress who shared the screen with some of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, but a woman who lived according to her own principles and refused to become someone she was not.

Her daughter’s touching farewell expressed that independent spirit beautifully.

“You will always be in my heart,” Naiia wrote. “I love you.”
