I’m a 25-year-old newlywed, happily married to my 28-year-old husband, whom I love dearly.
Last weekend, I prepared a dish using one of my late mother’s recipes and brought it to a family dinner at my in-laws’ home.
As I placed it on the table, my mother-in-law shot me an unfriendly glare and snapped, “Take your mother’s food out of my house!”
Tears filled my eyes as I walked out and waited in the car for my husband for an entire hour.
The drive home was quiet until he suddenly started laughing and said, “Did you hear the joke my cousin told during dinner? He’s so funny—he really ought to become a comedian.”
I remained speechless, deeply wounded that he hadn’t even noticed I was gone or recognized the humiliation his mother had put me through.
This was just the second family gathering I had attended and only the third time I had ever met my mother-in-law.
Sadly, my own mother passed away a year before my husband and I got married, and my mother-in-law never had the opportunity to meet her.
I cannot understand why she seems to dislike me so much. Now, I feel not only embarrassed but also heartbroken that she showed such disrespect toward the memory of my mother.
What hurts even more is my husband’s lack of concern. He hasn’t apologized or even acknowledged how deeply his mother’s behavior affected me.
I’m finding it difficult to move on from this experience, especially when I have received no support from my husband and no apology from him for his mother’s hurtful actions.
