Invoice for a First Date…

Posted on October 2, 2026

The next morning overturned that impression with a single text.

Instead of a warm follow-up, Eric sent a professionally formatted “Date Night Invoice” that meticulously itemized every gesture from the night before. The bouquet, the engraved keychain, each opened door, every pulled-out chair, his engaging conversation, and the full dinner with tip were all converted into line items matched to specific “payment” expectations: a hug, a scheduled coffee date, a selfie, holding hands, a compliment, and, most significantly, a guaranteed second date “with no excuses.”

The document ended with a bold warning that failure to “pay” could send the balance to “collections,” naming Chris—without his consent—as the person who would enforce it.

Stunned, I forwarded the invoice to Mia, and within minutes, Chris called, laughing in disbelief at a version of Eric he had never imagined.

Chris responded by mirroring Eric’s formality and turning it back on him. He drafted an equally polished counter-invoice that inverted the logic of the original, “billing” Eric for being introduced to “a gorgeous woman,” with the penalty of a permanent social-media block.

He also charged him for “convincing you that you were a gentleman” by assigning him the task of reflecting on why he was single. Simply “allowing you to sit at the same table as her” came with a requirement to apologize to past dates, while “not exposing you to the entire internet” was framed as a priceless act of mercy, backed by a mock threat of public humiliation if unpaid.

When Chris sent it, Eric replied indignantly, insisting he was only setting “realistic expectations” and lamenting that not everyone appreciated “the value of a gentleman’s gestures.”

My own final response was a single thumbs-up emoji, followed by blocking his number.

Left behind, the roses and keychain became physical reminders of an evening that began in old-fashioned charm and ended as a sharp, digital parable about how quickly connection can be reduced to a ledger—and how crucial authenticity, humor, and mutual respect remain in modern courtship.
