I hired an actor, Clark, to pose as my boyfriend after my ex-husband, Jordan, announced he was bringing the younger woman he left me for, Percy, to our son’s pool party.
Jordan had spent months making me feel invisible. He left after twenty years of marriage, claiming I was no longer attractive, and subsequently missed games, calls, and milestone moments with our four children.
When Jordan arrived with Percy, he looked at Clark and mocked, “A man like him with you?”
Clark calmly handed Jordan a small gift box prepared by our children. Inside were old family photos, handmade Father’s Day cards, and printed text messages from our son Ethan asking Jordan to attend his games—most of which had gone unanswered. At the bottom was a note:
“Since Percy is your real family now, we thought you’d want these memories back.”
Jordan accused me of turning the children against him. However, Percy read the messages and realized he had lied to her about being a devoted father.
“I don’t want to stand beside a man who ignores his own children,” she said, ending their relationship on the spot and leaving.
When Jordan began shouting at Ethan, I stepped between them and ordered him off my property.
After the party, Clark admitted his feelings were not entirely an act. One man had spent years making me feel worthless; the other needed only one afternoon to remind me I wasn’t.
When Clark asked me out to dinner, I smiled and said yes.
