The small town of Saucier, Mississippi, is in a state of shock and mourning following the disappearance and tragic death of 6-year-old Gracelyn Vick on Sunday afternoon.
Family members reported that Gracelyn went outside to play in her yard around noon but did not return. After several hours without any sign of her, her worried family reached out to the authorities. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office quickly initiated an urgent search operation, enlisting the help of nearby law enforcement, Gulf Coast Search and Rescue, helicopters, drones, and about 40 local volunteers.
Tragically, Gracelyn’s body was discovered later that evening near her family’s property. Law enforcement officials cordoned off parts of the family’s land, including areas around a swing set and livestock enclosures, as they meticulously collected evidence throughout the night. Gracelyn’s body was removed from the scene around 8 p.m., according to WLOX.
Sheriff Matt Haley addressed rampant online speculation on Monday, clarifying that no arrests had been made. “It’s too early to determine if foul play is involved,” Haley stated, underscoring the ongoing investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled at the state crime lab in Biloxi to determine the cause of death.
The community has responded with an overwhelming outpouring of support and sympathy, both online and locally. Grief counselors have been made available at Saucier Elementary to assist students in coping with the loss of their cherished classmate.
This tragedy is especially devastating for Gracelyn’s mother, Vicky Lynn Hutcherson, who has faced the heartbreaking loss of three children in recent years. Last March, Vicky’s 13-year-old stepdaughter, Victoria Hutcherson, tragically died in a car accident on U.S. 49. Additionally, in July 2021, the family experienced another profound loss when Gracelyn’s brother, 18-year-old Larry Hart, passed away due to a medical condition.
The community stands together in grief, hoping that authorities can quickly and thoroughly uncover the truth behind this heartbreaking incident. In the meantime, they continue to offer prayers and support to the grieving family, honoring the memory of young Gracelyn Vick.
