ST7. Myiasis: What Is It, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, and More

Myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by fly larvae (maggots) infesting human or animal tissue. It’s more common in tropical regions like South America and Africa but can occur anywhere with poor hygiene or exposure to flies. Types include skin, nasal, eye, intestinal, and urogenital infestations.

Flies lay eggs on wounds, clothing, or skin. The hatched larvae burrow into tissue, feeding on live or dead flesh. Risk factors include open wounds, poor hygiene, and contact with infected animals or contaminated surfaces.

Symptoms vary by type—boils, visible larvae, pain, nasal discharge, eye irritation, or digestive issues. Diagnosis usually involves spotting the larvae, supported by lab tests or scans in deeper cases.

Treatment includes removing larvae, using antiparasitic meds like ivermectin, and cleaning the wounds. Prevention involves good hygiene, insect repellent, protective clothing, and avoiding damp or soiled items, especially when traveling to high-risk areas.
